Are Your Goals Still Goaling?

Updated: Apr 9

We are about to be finished with quarter one of the new year. Usually, by now, people are knee-deep in achieving their goals. Or if you’re anything like me, you’ve started and stopped a few times along the way. I’m sure you’ve heard (if not said) this phrase a few times in your life, “new year, new me,” intending to set and crush goals. So I’m checking on y’all to see if the goals have been goaling. Are y’all creating and slaying goals, or are you looking at the list of goals like me? If you’re looking at the goals like I am or if you can’t seem to get things done, no worries, I’ve got a few tips for you (and me).

Congratulations to those who are slaying their goals! I am so proud of you. Keep up the excellent work. Ok, for all of the other people on the struggle boat, read on. I’m on the struggle boat, too, because babbbbyyyy, I’m writing down the same goals every year! I never noticed how much I struggled with executing goals until now. Perhaps it’s because of the pandemic and being at home that I’ve noticed a little more of all of the things that I haven’t done. Pre-pandemic, I was busy, busy. Or maybe I wasn’t, but the appearance would say otherwise. One thing I can do is set a goal; it’s something else to execute and achieve. Sure I’ve done some things here and there that I’m proud of, but I find myself circling back to the ones I haven’t slain and trying to figure out what’s wrong.

Here are some tips to help both of us:

  1. Setting goals: I can say that I’ve set unrealistic goals and deep down inside, I knew that. When setting goals for yourself, make sure that they’re realistic. If you’re hoping to be a billionaire by June but don’t have a job…revisit the goal! If you’re like me, you may have a bunch of goals that you want to accomplish. That’s okay; be smart about it. It’s okay if you can’t accomplish all of the goals at the same time. That may be a setup for a mess-up, which can make you feel defeated. If you have lots of goals spread them out throughout the year.

  2. Planning: Planning is key to everything. If you don’t know where you’re going you cannot arrive at the destination, someone smart said! I’m guilty of not really planning out what’s really needed for me to achieve a goal. I'm blaming ADHD for that! Take the time out to write down the steps that are needed to achieve each goal. What do you need to then accomplish each step? What tools need to be put in place? Do you need additional resources? Do you have the money? Do you need an accountability partner? Planning can save you a lot of time stressing and feeling overwhelmed.

  3. Execute: And this is where I get stuck! Now that you’ve figured out your goals and how to accomplish them, the only thing left to do is to do it! Right? Well, execution also requires that you have the ability to actually do it. If you’re unsure, then perhaps you need to stick a little longer in the planning phase. Execution should feel easy. If it isn’t figure out what the block is. I can be honest, the block is usually me. I am too much in my head doubting myself or thinking that what I’m doing is not good enough. It’s a constant battle. Also, I’ve learned that I’m not as organized as I thought I was, so I have to run back to step 2. If you feel as if you’re not getting anything done and that there is something blocking you, and you don’t know what it is…it’s ok to try and figure that out in therapy (you know I was going to plug therapy).

  4. Repeat: If you’ve executed or slayed your goals, celebrate the win and repeat the process for the next one.

As always, I’m cheering for you! No I take that back, I’m cheering for us! There is still plenty of time for you to crush your goals!
